A 16-year old girl from Kolkatta - Shinjini Sengupta -- is in a state of severe shock after she was rebuked on a reality show on a Bengali TV Channel. Following the incident, Shinjini can now neither speak nor move. She was a good dancer , has acted in tele-serials and has even appeared in a Bengali film. However, things have changed after participating in a dance competition on a Bengali TV channel, where she was rebuked by the judges of the show. Since then, she has never recovered from the shock of being publicly chided.
After being chided by the judges of the programme, she slipped into depression and then lost her speech and finally even the use of her limbs. Shinjini is now in Bangalore's Nimhans Hospital undergoing treatment.
Meanwhile, Shinjini's mother -- Sibani Sengupta -- said that after returning from the reality show, Shinjini was quiet upset and not her usual self. "On returning home, she said she felt like singing loudly. I asked her if she was upset. She just said that she had fought hard, however, she couldn't hold back her tears. After that day, she was not her usual self," said Sibani.
Shinjini's father, meanwhile, has lashed out at the television channel saying that if channels can't produce such shows well, then they should be stopped.
According to girl's family, Shinjini managed to shoot a few episodes for a tele-serial even in initial days of her depression and while one episode was being shot she began struggling with her dialogue and eventually stopped speaking.
Visits to a psychiatrist failed to yield any result and she was admitted to a nursing home earlier this month from where she was shifted to the Calcutta Medical Research Institute (CMRI).
"When Shinjini was brought here she was unable to speak or eat. She was also very weak and unable to move her hands or legs. We conducted MRI tests and came to the conclusion that she was suffering either from Viral Encephalitis or Acute Diseminated Encephalo-Myalitis (EDEM)," Dr S S Nandi, CMRI's consulting neurologist who attended on Sinjini said.
Nandi said Shinjini needed more specialised tests which could not be conducted at CMRI. "We, therefore, advised that she be taken to Bengaluru."
Commenting on the entire episode, renowned psychiatrist -- Sonia Mehta -- has placed the blame squarely on Shinjini's parents, who put her through such pressure and trauma.
However, ETV Bangla, the channel on which Shinjini was rebuked, refused to take the blame and put the onus on the producers of the show. The channel issued a clarification saying :"This is a commissioned show. The producers are responsible for all the content."
Reacting on the episode, lyricist Javed Akhtar said:"It's really very sad. I just hope that the girl becomes totally normal again. She must have been traumatised and shocked. When we are dealing with children of 15-16 years of age, we have to extra sensitive. I personally think that we as a society are callous in our approach and we don't understand that as a society that children have self respect and self esteem and you can't crush like that."
"It's a very sad and I think, the judges should understand as to how to treat the contestants," music director, Shekhar said.
